Cabbage is one of the most versatile brassicas, providing harvests almost year-round if you grow different types. From tender spring greens to hearty winter heads, cabbage is a staple in many UK gardens, and a reliable crop for polytunnels.

When to Sow Cabbage
- Spring Cabbage: Sow July–August, plant out in September–October for harvesting the following spring.
- Summer/Autumn Cabbage: Sow February–April indoors, transplant April–June.
- Winter Cabbage: Sow April–May, transplant June–July for late-season harvests.
How to Grow Cabbage
- Choose firm, fertile soil and enrich with compost before planting.
- Space plants according to type:
- Spring: 20–30cm apart (closer for spring greens, wider for hearts).
- Summer/Autumn: 45cm apart.
- Winter: 45–60cm apart, depending on variety.
- Firm soil around roots to prevent rocking in the wind.
- Keep well-watered during dry spells and protect from pigeons and cabbage root fly.
Harvesting Cabbage
- Spring Cabbage: Harvest April–May, either cutting whole hearts or picking leaves as spring greens.
- Summer/Autumn Cabbage: Harvest June–October when heads are solid and firm.
- Winter Cabbage: Harvest November–March — hardy varieties can stand well through frost and snow.
Polytunnel Growing Tips
- A polytunnel allows earlier sowings and better seedling establishment, particularly for spring and winter types.
- Protects young plants from pigeons, flea beetle, and harsh weather.
- Be careful of excess heat in summer; ventilate well to avoid bolting or mildew.
- Extends the harvesting season, especially useful for spring cabbage which overwinters well under cover.
Quick Tips Recap
- Sow: Jul–Aug (spring), Feb–Apr (summer/autumn), Apr–May (winter).
- Spacing: 20–60cm depending on type.
- Harvest: Almost year-round with the right mix of varieties.
- Polytunnel advantage: Stronger seedlings, pest protection, extended season.
